Deep in the Heart 5K: Peterson Health hosts first annual race

Peterson Health, Kerrville’s independent, nonprofit health care organization, will host its first annual race, the Deep in the Heart 5K, with a start time of 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Trailhead Beer Garden on the Schreiner University campus, 2100 Memorial Blvd.

This event is dedicated to raising awareness for American Heart Month.

February is designated as American Heart Month each year to help promote wellness by encouraging people to focus on their cardiovascular health, especially heart disease prevention.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women.

“Race participants will receive educational material in their race day packets to aid in these awareness efforts,” said Jessica Kearns, Peterson’s wellness center coordinator. “In addition, we will have an educational tent at the race start/finish area, where participants or spectators can stop and talk with Peterson employees about heart health.”

Participants are invited to walk, jog or run their way through Kerrville’s River Trail.

The entry fee for this race is $35 for adults and includes a T-shirt.

Entry for children 12 years of age and younger is no cost and does not include a T-shirt.

“We do intend to have all revenue and donations received from this event earmarked for enhancing the quality of cardiac care that Peterson provides to patients every day,” Kearns said.
