Severe flooding prompts evacuations in Kerr County
Severe rainfall put a hold on 4th of July celebrations in Kerr County.
A swath of 5-10 inches of rainfall has been estimated since approximately 1 a.m. across south-central Kerr County with 6.5” measured in Hunt and 7.85” measured just upstream of Hunt.
The U.S. National Weather service reported at 5:10 a.m. Friday that the Guadalupe River in Hunt reached the second highest height on record, even higher than the 1987 flood which reached a height of 37.72 feet.
The flood wave was expected to continue downstream through Kerrville and Comfort.
At 6:29 a.m., the Kerrville police department urged all residents who live hear the Guadalupe River to evacuate, with the temporary reunification point being the Walmart at 2106 Junction Highway.
At 6:32 a.m., the local police urged residents in the Rio Robles RV Park, River Oaks Apartments, Water Street, Herzog Street, Loop 13, Guadalupe Street and Lowry Street to evacuate.
At 7:05 a.m., the department released a partial list of road and street closures, which included Arcadia Loop, the majority of Thompson Drive, Guadalupe Street, Lowry Street, Herzog Street, Loop 13, Rio Robles, Riverside Drive and portions of Broadway.
At 8:41 a.m., the department reported that the First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Drive, has been established as a shelter for those displaced by the flooding.
“Kerrville Fire Department personnel are monitoring area nursing and assisted living homes,” said a KPD spokesperson. “They are sheltering in place at this time.”
The Texas Department of Transportation has closed Texas 39 in Hunt.
The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed fatalities but will not be releasing further information until next of kin are notified.
Local authorities are working with other county and state agencies to respond to rescues.
Emergency personnel urge residents not to drive through water and not to call 911 for updates.
The situation remains active and more updates will be provided.
“The entire county is an extremely active scene. Residents are encouraged to shelter in place and not attempt travel,” said a spokesperson from KCSO.
